Wireless Network Troubleshooting
Anyone with experience with a wireless network knows very well that they are both extremely helpful and extremely likely to have problems now and again. Most problems people run into with their wireless network manifest themselves by the loss of connectivity.
Losing your Internet access can be bothersome at the best of times, and extremely frustrating at the worst of times. We're so used to having information at our finger tips that it is surprising and upsetting when we suddenly don't, as if someone has taken away our rights. Fortunately this break in connectivity doesn't have to last long, and very likely will not be hard to fix. Following are a few tips for wireless network troubleshooting.
The first and most obvious place to start is to check all your connections between the router and the DSL modem and ensure that the appropriate status lights are on.
Make sure that your wireless network adapter(s) are installed correctly and are also showing the correct lighting signals. Also, be sure you have the correct device driver installed for your wireless network.
Take a look at your signal strength. If it is low, or goes up and down, pay attention to anything that may be blocking or interfering with the signal. Some appliances that operate on the same frequency can disrupt the signal. This is true of cordless phones and microwaves. Be sure these appliances are situated at least one meter away from the access point.
Pay attention to where your router is placed. It needs to be in a central location, but make sure that it isn't surrounded by any obstructions, such as thick brick walls or reflective surfaces.
Try changing the position of your antenna. Such a small thing really can make a difference.
You can also try upgrading to a more powerful antenna. This can increase the range of your network and make problems with your connection less frequent or likely.
Installing a repeater can give you a great range and a stronger signal from a wider area.
Be sure your DHCP addresses are correct and that the IP addresses are the same for other computers in the network.
Check other setting and encryption keys to make sure everything is as it should be.
Most if not all of these wireless network troubleshooting techniques should be possible for you to do on your own. If you don't feel comfortable with some of the steps, just ask a friend with a bit more computer experience to lend you a hand. That type of person is always happy for a chance to gain more experience with computers, and, I'm sure, of course, to help out a friend as well!
