Understanding The Wireless Network
Any kind of computer network that is wireless is known as a wireless network. These networks, which are often associated with a telecommunications network, use a form of remote information transmission such as by radio waves.
The smallest of the wireless networks is a Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN). This network is usually just in a small area within a single person's reach.
The next kind of wireless network is the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) which are used to connect computers in a home, school or office. In order for these networks to be used only by those entitled to it, the network must be encrypted. Wi-Fi is a wireless network that allows for connection to the Internet and other devices with Wi-Fi abilities. Fixed Wireless Data links computers or networks at two different locations, such as in two or more buildings in the city.
Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks connect multiple WLANs. This type of network is known as a WiMAX.
Lastly, we have mobile devices networks, which have come into being with the development of smart phones which act as telephones as well as being able to carry computer data. Most cell phones are connected by the Global System for Mobile Communications or GSM network. In North America there is also the Personal Communications Service which connects mobile phones in that area.
Wireless networking was first used during World War II and was effective in helping to send messages overseas and behind enemy lines. Since then, emergency services such as the police and fire departments have benefited greatly by the use of wireless networks which allow them to communicate information quickly and efficiently. Cellular phones is a huge area where wireless networking plays a role.
Wireless networking has gone a long way to improve the communication of information between people and has dramatically shrunk our world, and provided people with access to information that would otherwise have had to make a trip to find it out.
Wireless networking has made offices safer and more efficient, without the need for cables running from desk to desk to connect them for printing, faxing and Internet connections. Efficiency is greatly increased as offices have access to the same information without having to be connected by wire.
Convenience at home has increased as well, as there is not being tied down to a certain spot in your house to perform all your computer's functions. All it takes is a wireless network and you can have access to whatever you need without having to be connected anywhere.
Despite the many multiple and amazing benefits of wireless networks, there are still those who worry that the electromagnetic radiation from wireless communication can have a negative effect on our health. This has yet to be proven, and the benefits so far outweigh what is seen as a potential threat that at this point, for most people it is hardly worth considering.
